Backyard photography
May 18, 2012
I’ve been experimenting a lot of self photography sessions lately and yesterday I took some pictures of flowers that are currently flourishing in my backyard.
I love this time of year when so many flowers are growing, some I don’t remember ever planting. Recently we purchased Passion Flowers and planted them in pots. Within a month, boom! the flowers are out of control and taking over the outside of our house. Simply amazing.
Most times I am more amazed by the negative spaces created by these beautiful natural compositions, than the subject itself. I’ve done some sketches from these photos for future rug designs. I’m very much influenced by drama and mystery.

why i love photographing kids
there is something special about nepalese kids: they always smile. every time when my husband and i visit nepal we get to interact with kids, it’s almost inevitable. if you don’t interact with them they will most certainly interact with you.
most kids i met were happy to pause for my camera after i asked them. one by one they took turn and smiled at me. some wondered. some were just curious and refused to get near. i would wonder around kathmandu between meetings and watched them carry their backpacks or younger siblings on their back, going to or coming from school. being kids. but very different kids. some of them we found to be very clever, street clever and funny too. they are always the ones that ask questions. they make me wonder about them and then…i start thinking about my own kids.
kids are captured in pure expressions, that’s why i love these images:
one of my favorites: my husband (vidal) on the left of course.
the image above: my absolute favorite.
the sweetest little thing.
enthusiastic young boy. he asked me to take five pictures of him. i did. six.
i’m a wonderer but sometimes i try not to think too much. the sad thing with these trips to nepal is when i have to go back home to the states (can’t wait to hug and kiss my own kids), it’s hard to say goodbye, to not think about these children…you know what i mean?

sunday inspiration
November 13, 2011
when i’m asked where my inspiration comes from, which happens quite often, i almost always say the same thing: inspiration is everywhere, but in my mind my thoughts are a little abstract, they wonder.
this picture reminds me that nature is my biggest inspiration in every possible way. yeah sure, it’s a rustic small bird bath so what’s so special about it. it’s been sitting in my backyard for a couple of years and i almost never pay attention to it. until now.
i bought the bird bath thinking birds would come and…bath in it, nothing special. my daughter laughed at me saying mom what were you thinking it’s too small. she was right so i just left it. but let me tell you, this thing has been abused and beaten by harsh rains, sun, dust, even my sister’s cigarettes which soon enough it became her favorite ash tray.
but if you think about it, i love how the worn look of this metal bird bath changes colors when light hits it during the day, the simple stark color combination that caught my eye, the play of shadows and texture – the simple things that we tend to overlook start to play a different tune in my mind.
when let loose, elements like color, texture or composition are enough to cause a shift in my head and makes me add this special image to my design list.
so what’s your inspiration?

“You don’t take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.”

There are some things in life that keep me from sitting and writing posts every day (which would be ideal for me. Just for me)…I’m sure you know what I mean when I say ‘life’. I have a lot to talk about… inspiration is everywhere and I can go on and on… but the good news is that I just got this amazing new camera… it forces me to create a new hobby: photography.
Not that I didn’t take pictures before but that camera is a sexy little piece of machine, that allows me to take shots of my rugs, room settings, samples, drawings and paintings…anything. It’s just that…when I take photos with the new camera I’m actually sitting on the ground, aiming at a subject…adjusting…exposure…light…composition…you know…almost like a pro.
…and this is only one example…of the many things she can do for me…
Amazed at the new perspective…when all is contained… in one tiny lens…
… the night was so gorgeous I had to get out to my backyard and take some pictures of my plants…
…while my husband is shouting from the inside…the plans for our next project…
I’m all for…ambiance…
…through my new “eyes” darkness is already looking better…
…drama and ambiance…
oh, I could imagine all kinds of things happening with these two words…
…a tree trunk that looks boring during the day…look at it now…
This is my next botanical painting.
…this plant took over my backyard…now takes over the neighbor’s…hope he wont mind.
…looks like a giant illuminated pink umbrella…
simply stunning.
…and the ambiance changes…
early morning…very early…
Love calla genus (lily).
I illustrated this elegant flower in pen and ink and gave it to a friend as Hanukkah present. We are not friends anymore (she didn’t like my painting?…) ha.
I can always make a new one…(friend or illustration?)
Can you see the hair on this gorgeous purple flower?? It looks right back at you.
…a neighbor’s butterfly-weed took over my yard…now I don’t have to buy it…
…every girl loves pink… right?…bright…light…gorgeous pink…right?
Have this orange tree for a couple of years now…and only one orange…
doesn’t even smell like one…
you can tell by the leafs…
maybe it needs some vitamin c…
Last minute change in our backyard makeover design (yay)… few hours later we installed this beautiful noisy fountain.
I love noise.
Can’t wait to experiment more with my camera.
But like anything else…
practice…practice…practice.
