from heritage to design
and the inspiration behind the new hair-on-hide rug collection
these past three weeks have been incredible…one on one time with my mom and two sisters, who came to visit me and to celebrate passover together.
listening to my mother’s stories of childhood memories…took me back to my very lucky visit…not long ago…to one of the most culturally rich countries – morocco…my parents birthplace and home.
my own moroccan experience…is nothing but a crumb compare to my mother’s…a beautiful reminder that i’m a woman proud of her cultural heritage.
with bright eyes my mother talks…in details…and lots of mix sentences in arabic, hebrew and french…about her parents…old traditions…berber rug making…rich and textured carpets that covered the floors of her home in casablanca…when she was a young bride.
vidal is checking out the rugs in one of the many factories we’ve visited in morocco during our trip.
my mother talks about the making of rich colored fabrics turned into elaborate traditional customs…worn by young brides before their wedding night…just like she did with me on my wedding…i felt like a queen. all the attention…
in details she talks about crafting leather goods…like shoes…poufs (i should have bought more than one) and rugs…the process…the colors…beautiful and gorgeous hide adorned her home. i still remember my father’s soft leather slippers…
back in the days my parents owned a leather workshop in casablanca and later in israel…they designed and crafted ladies bags and shoes. my dad never bought shoes from a store. i always had mine custom made. i know now where all this creativity comes from…
abundance of colors, textures and shapes in the souks of morocco can lift any soul.
hotel mamounia in marrakesh is filled with mosaic craftsmanship…will show more photos in future posts.
my already loaded head only got fuller with my mom’s stories and left me hungry for more…i must celebrate it…show it…we decided to design a new collection hair on hide… all done by hand…this time we are using undyed cow-hide.
turbulance of elements and design, rich history, magic and lots of texture…and always…always a touch of elegance:
this collection celebrates modern moroccan love…elegant…chic…and endless design possibilities.
